Have You Heard about Omega 3?

Those who are health-conscious (and even those who are not so health-conscious) have surely heard a bit about omega 3, a fatty acid. While most people have heard of it, many are still unsure exactly what it is or why it's important.

The majority of Americans eat too much processed food, which is typically high in omega 6. We all could use more omega 3 in the foods we eat. Studies have shown too much omega 6 and too little omega 3 can cause an imbalance which can result in chronic inflammation and other conditions. We need to make changes for the better where our health is concerned. Trying to eat more whole, unprocessed plant-based foods while reducing the processed convenience foods we eat is a great start, but is it enough?

Some of the best sources of omega 3 are flax seeds and chia seeds as well as walnuts. Whole flax that can be ground just before ingesting is the most potent. Chia does not need to be ground before eating. Both chia and flax are whole foods that are very high in omega 3 and also fiber. They have lots of great minerals such as iron, magnesium, and other nutrients.
